What to Watch for On the Roads This New Year's Eve

Posted By Hutton & Hutton Law Firm, LLC || 30-Dec-2015

New Year’s Eve is one of the most riotous holiday celebrations in the nation. People of all walks of life like to celebrate with friends and family by drinking champagne and staying up until the next calendar year becomes official. While this can be a great time for many, it can be an awful danger for others as intoxicated partygoers start to hit the road in the AM.

If you are going to be driving New Year’s Eve night and New Year’s Day morning, keep an eye out for these potential hazards:

  1. Drunk drivers: For most counties around the country, there are more driving under the influence (DUI) arrests on 12/31 and 1/1 than any other days of the year. Be extra careful when heading home and give other drivers plenty of space. If you see erratic driving behavior, notify the authorities as soon as it is safe to call them. Your actions might just spare another from serious consequences by having the motorist pulled over by police.
  2. Traffic stops: Along the same vein of there being more intoxicated drivers on the road, there will also be an increased number of traffic stops that night. Be prepared to come to a complete stop in areas where the lanes usually flow freely, especially near highway intersections. Always comply with law enforcement officers and follow their instructions. The more cooperative you are, the faster you will be through the stop and on your way home again.
  3. Slick roads: Temperatures can drop considerably in the early morning hours of the day. Any water collected on the highway could easily freeze over and become a hidden ice slick. Check temperature forecasts before you head out and listen to traffic reports when you are ready to head home. With some planning, you may be able to avoid dangerous accident hotspots.
