Roundup Cancer Lawsuits Move Forward

California Judge Allows Cancer Lawsuits Against Monsanto to Proceed

On July 10, 2018, United States District Court Judge Vince Chhabria released a statement permitting the progression of lawsuits against Monsanto, the company that produces the popular weed-killer, Roundup.

Until this point, hundreds of lawsuits have been held up while the court evaluated the merits of the scientific evidence being used to justify claims that Roundup causes cancer, during which time Monsanto alleged that the research presented was unreliable “junk science.” Seeing some merit to the claims and the expert testimonies presented, Judge Chhabria decided to allow Roundup lawsuits to proceed.

While it doesn’t necessarily increase claimants’ chances of achieving victory against Monsanto, this is great news for people who have fallen ill as a result of using Roundup, as it allows injured consumers to pursue fair compensation for damages.

Does Roundup Really Cause Cancer?

As a Roundup user, you may be wondering, “Does it actually cause cancer?”

The Roundup ingredient glyphosate is thought to cause various forms of cancer. There is no conclusive evidence that this is true, but the connection between use of products containing glyphosate and the development of certain cancers (such as multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma) is enough to give pause to researchers, health organizations, and now federal judges.

Additional Risks Associated with Roundup Weed Killer

You may not develop cancer as a result of Roundup, but you may be vulnerable to other serious health risks. Whether or not it is a verified carcinogen, glyphosate is poisonous if ingested. Should you drink or inhale it, you may experience burns inside the mouth, esophagus, and digestive tract.

Some claim that Roundup is responsible for multiple other issues, from birth defects to depression. There is not much research that would affirm or contradict such claims, but this does not mean people who feel Roundup is to blame for their injuries are without legal recourse.

If you suspect your injuries or illnesses stem from Roundup or any other dangerous chemical product, the best thing you can do is connect with an experienced product liability lawyer as soon as possible to discuss your case.
